Clean Up and a New Raised Bed
Earth Day was another success! The Laurel Village Association had our usual day of weeding and trash pick up. We had lots of folks come out with their own gardening tools and visits by happy neighbors. Not only were nine bags of weeds and trimmings collected but also two large bags of garbage.
We also had more venerable hubcap painting by our Local Hero, Cyrille Waterman. Cyrille was able to paint, decorate and hang four new hubcaps and we placed a ceramic planter in the median below the two hubcaps there.
We achieved our goal of building another raised bed, the first for the organization and paid for by the grant we received from “Keep Oakland Beautiful.” Neighbors John Donivan and Doug Stone both put a tremendous effort into getting it completed.
Another project begun was preparation for mosaic tiling a garbage can at the bus stop and a planter on the 35th Avenue median. Roberto Costa came by after his work day in Allendale, where he has done several mosaic projects, and he was able to demonstrate the procedure of floating thin set. We’re very excited about getting the tiling project started.
The best part of this day was meeting more neighbors and fellow garden/art lovers and realizing that many have adopted this “parklet” as theirs. Our garden is truly growing & expanding by leaps and bounds.
